Free Space Optics Provide Line Of Sight Over Greater Distances

Free space optics, also called laser links or optical wireless, is a highly efficient way to link your voice and data networks between neighbouring buildings.
The technology is very much like fibre optic, using a light source to transmit the data but instead of being contained in a cable, the laser signal is transmitted through air (free space) – hence the term free space optics. It’s a great way to achieve high capacity high-speed networks between separate buildings.

Free space optics – so many advantages

Free space optics have the advantage of no wires, so installation is relatively simple. Free space optics bring many other benefits too:

  • It can be a cost-effective alternative to leased-line
  • Cost effective alternative to an underground fibre link
  • High bandwidths available up to 10 Gigabit
  • Licence free operation
  • Rapid deployment – less than a day
  • Unlike microwave solutions, free space optics are immune from interference
  • Completely wireless

Ideal for disaster recovery and savings on leased lines

Free space optics or laser link solutions represent the latest state-of-the-art technology in the field of wireless communication. As long as your buildings have a clear line of sight between them, it’s a fast, reliable solution.
In particular, customers find it an ideal technology to replace leased lines in disaster recovery applications and in urban areas or city centres where their use can be prohibitively expensive. Free space optics are also ideal for factories or industrial environments where high noise levels can interfere with transmitted data.
For ‘non line of sight’ setups, ACCL also offer wireless RF Links (Radio Frequency) units, which can operate without the need for the units to physically see each other.
