Does Microsoft Copilot or Teams need faster cabling?

Accepted Answer

Usually not. Microsoft 365 Copilot adds relatively little raw bandwidth demand. Stable internet connectivity, latency, concurrent use, Wi-Fi capacity, QoS and uplink design are generally more important than providing 10GbE to every desk. Existing Cat5e cabling can still constrain a busy floor.

Do I need Cat8 cabling for AI in my office?

Cat8 is not normally appropriate for standard office horizontal cabling. It supports 25/40GbE over distances of approximately 30 metres and is primarily intended for data-centre applications. Cat6A supports 10GbE over a 100 metre channel and is generally the more suitable baseline for a new UK office installation.

What makes a building 'AI-ready' for cabling?

For a commercial office, AI-ready means: Cat6A as the horizontal baseline (10GbE to 100m), enough multi-gig backhaul and PoE++ (IEEE 802.3bt, up to 90W) for Wi-Fi 6E/7 access points and AI-enabled cameras, a fibre backbone (OM4/OS2) up the risers, and certified test results showing useful performance margin. It does not mean hyperscale data-centre kit.

Can Cat6 handle PoE++ and high-power AI devices?

Accepted Answer

Cat6 can carry PoE, but at the higher 60–90W (802.3bt Type 3/4) used by AI cameras and modern access points, dense bundles heat up and you may have to shorten runs to stay within the 15°C bundle temperature-rise limit. Cat6A (23 AWG) dissipates heat better and roughly doubles the safe bundle size, which is why it is the recommended default for high-power PoE.

How long will Cat6A cabling last?

Accepted Answer

A properly installed and certified Cat6A system is commonly planned around a 15 to 20-year service life. It supports 10GbE and can accommodate modern Wi-Fi and PoE requirements when the complete channel is designed appropriately.
