Wi-Fi Installation for Schools & Colleges

Reliable wireless is now core to teaching and safeguarding. From cloud-based classroom apps and digital exams to staff comms, CCTV backhaul and visitor access, a school’s Wi-Fi has to deliver consistent coverage, secure segmentation and predictable performance across classrooms, halls, sports blocks and outbuildings—without disruption to the timetable.

ACCL designs and installs survey-led, standards-aligned Wi-Fi for primary, secondary and FE settings across London, Surrey and Kent. We work out of hours, integrate with your existing switches and cabling, and hand over complete documentation so your internal IT can support it with confidence.

Why school Wi-Fi struggles (and how we fix it)

Even good hardware can underperform if the foundation is wrong. The common failure modes we see in schools:

  • Dead zones & drop-offs: Building fabric (thick walls, steel, glass) and ad-hoc AP placement create unreliable coverage—especially in older blocks and temporary classrooms.

  • Co-channel interference: Overlapping channels and auto-power misconfigurations cause roaming hiccups and “sticky clients,” killing lesson momentum.

  • Insufficient backhaul & PoE: APs starved by 100 Mb/s uplinks or under-powered switches cap throughput and stability.

  • Flat networks: Single VLAN SSIDs with shared credentials raise safeguarding and data-separation risks for staff/guest/IoT.

  • Untidy cabinets & unknown runs: Legacy cabling, unlabeled outlets and spaghetti racks make troubleshooting slow and upgrades risky.

Our approach starts with measurement—then builds a right-sized design that your team can run day-to-day.

Our survey-led approach

1) On-site wireless survey
We map current RF conditions, wall types and attenuation using professional tools, then validate proposed AP locations with test APs where needed. For new builds/refurbs, we run a predictive model and confirm on install.

2) Robust wired layer
We assess risers, cabinets and runs to ensure each AP gets the bandwidth and power it needs—multi-gig uplinks and PoE budgeting where appropriate. If cabling needs remediation, we phase it with lessons to avoid disruption.

3) Design for density & roaming
We select AP counts and placements for realistic concurrency (exams, assemblies), apply per-band/channel plans, tune transmit power, and set minimum data rates to reduce sticky clients and improve airtime fairness.

4) Secure segmentation
We separate Staff, Student, Guest and Devices/IoT with distinct SSIDs/VLANs and policies. WPA2-Enterprise/802.1X for staff devices, PSK or DPSK for students/guests as appropriate, and rate-limits where you want them.

5) Install, optimise, document
Out-of-hours installation keeps teaching on track. Post-install validation is followed by live tuning, then handover with floor plans, AP inventory, controller backups and change records.

What the finished solution includes

  • Right-sized access points: Indoor, outdoor and high-density models as required, placed for coverage and capacity—not just neat grids.
  • Clean, certified cabling: Correct category to each AP, tidy patching, and labelled outlets feeding back to ventilated cabinets with clear pathways and separation from power.
  • Controller & policies configured: SSIDs, RADIUS/802.1X, content segregation, VLANs and QoS for voice/video learning tools.
  • Resilient backhaul: Fibre or copper uplinks sized for peak usage with diverse routing where practical.
  • Monitoring & alerts: AP health, client counts and rogue detection set so IT can respond before lessons are affected.
  • Handover pack: Heatmaps, as-builts, outlet schedules, PoE budget tables and admin credentials stored in an agreed, secure format.

Safeguarding, exams and operations

  • Exams & assessment: We provision SSIDs/VLANs and bandwidth policies suitable for digital exams, with temporary profiles you can enable/disable per window.
  • Safeguarding & guest access: Student and guest traffic is separated from staff and admin systems. We’ll align with your filtering solution and support walled-garden/short-term credentials for events and parents’ evenings.
  • IoT & building systems: CCTV, signage, access control and BMS devices live on their own SSID/VLAN with constrained access—reducing risk and broadcast noise.
  • Change control & audits: Works proceed under agreed method statements and windows; we keep full records for SLT and governors.

Delivery in live school environments

Planned around the timetable – Noisy works are evenings/holidays. Daytime tasks are low-impact and isolated.
Clear communication – We brief site managers and caretakers, fence off work areas safely, and reinstate daily.
Phased roll-out – Block-by-block so parts of the campus benefit immediately while we continue elsewhere.
Zero-mess cabinets – We rationalise racks, label consistently and manage airflow; future adds/changes become low risk.

Benefits you’ll notice

  • Teaching continuity: Teachers connect first time, classes roam without drops, and streaming/video calls behave—even with full classrooms.
  • Predictable performance: Right-sized APs and tuned channels prevent slowdowns at peak.
  • Faster support: With proper labelling, heatmaps and controller visibility, your IT team can diagnose issues quickly.
  • Lower total cost: Correct cabling and PoE today avoids emergency fixes tomorrow; documentation shortens every future visit.
  • Future-ready: Designs leave room for 6 GHz/tri-band APs, denser coverage and new buildings as your campus evolves.

FAQs

  • Can you work in term time?
Yes. Surveys and installs that create noise are scheduled for evenings/holidays. Quiet tasks can proceed in teaching hours with safe segregation.
  • Do we need new cabling for every AP?
Not always. We test and document existing links, reuse what’s sound, and add/replace only where it improves stability, PoE or speeds.
  • Will staff and students need new passwords?
We’ll propose an SSID strategy that keeps disruption low—often retaining names while improving authentication behind the scenes.
  • Can you cover sports fields and remote blocks?
Yes—using outdoor-rated APs, directional links and proper backhaul so coverage is reliable, not just present.
  • Do you provide documentation and training?
Every project includes heatmaps, as-builts, patching matrices and admin run-throughs so your team can operate confidently.
