10 Questions to Ask Your CCTV Installation Provider—Before You Hire Them

10 Questions to Ask Your CCTV Installation Provider—Before You Hire Them

Price, brand names and slick brochures can hide a multitude of shortcomings. A CCTV system touches security, IT, data protection and even HR, so the installer you pick will influence everything from insurance premiums to staff confidence for years to come. The surest way to separate true professionals from opportunistic bidders is to ask the right questions—then listen closely to how they answer.

Below are ten conversation starters we wish every prospect used. They are written in plain English, light on jargon and heavy on the practical detail you need to make a confident decision.

  1. How many comparable projects have you completed in the last three years?

Experience is not a number of years in business; it is recent, relevant projects. Ask for examples that look like yours—similar camera count, building type or sector. A supplier who just finished three logistics depots will understand yard lighting and long-range lenses far better than one focused solely on cafés.

Our CCTV Installations page includes case studies across offices, warehouses and heritage sites.

  1. Which industry accreditations do you hold?

In the UK, reputable firms usually carry NSI Gold or SSAIB certification. These schemes audit everything from staff vetting to tool calibration. Anyone can buy cameras; accreditation proves they follow recognised standards such as BS EN 62676.

You can check certificates on the SSAIB public directory for peace of mind.

  1. Do you design with open standards like ONVIF and OSDP?

Open standards prevent vendor lock-in. If the installer promises a “closed ecosystem” that only they can service, think twice. ONVIF Profile T lets any compatible recorder talk to any compliant camera; OSDP secures card-reader data in integrated systems.

  1. How do you handle cyber-security?

Default passwords, unencrypted logins and open ports are a burglar’s best friend. A competent installer should mention HTTPS, VLAN segregation, regular firmware updates and written patch schedules. If they look puzzled, move on.

  1. What is included—and excluded—in your quoted price?

Ask for a line-by-line bill of quantities: cameras, brackets, PoE switches, cabling, containment, disposal of packaging, user training and first-year maintenance. Hidden extras often lurk in cabling and storage; clarity now prevents invoice disputes later.

  1. How will the system stay compliant with UK GDPR?

GDPR covers CCTV footage. The installer should talk about Data-Protection Impact Assessments, signage, retention periods and audit logs. A blank stare here can lead to ICO fines down the line.

  1. What warranty and service response times do you provide?

Two years on hardware and next-business-day engineer visits are typical for business-grade systems. Beware “return to base” warranties that require you to uninstall a faulty camera yourself. Confirm whether firmware support lasts as long as the hardware warranty.

  1. Can you integrate with our access control or alarm systems?

Even if you do not need integration today, future-proofing is smart. Ask how the cameras could trigger alarms or how badge events might bookmark footage. A confident installer will describe relay wiring, software licences and testing routines without overselling.

  1. How will you minimise disruption during installation?

Business continues while cables are pulled. Look for answers about working out of hours, using existing containment, dust control and phased switchovers so no area is left unmonitored.

  1. Who owns the system documentation?

After hand-over you should receive network diagrams, passwords sealed in an envelope, manufacturer datasheets and training videos. That documentation belongs to you, not the installer. It is your key to affordable support years later—whether from them or another provider.

Putting the Answers to Work

Create a simple comparison sheet and jot each bidder’s replies side by side. Gaps appear quickly: perhaps only one offers a cyber-patch plan; another refuses to share as-built drawings. Price still matters, but context sharpens its meaning. A £1,000 saving evaporates if you later pay double for proprietary licences or emergency call-outs.

ACCL’s Promise on Every Question Above

  1. Recent projects: documented case studies, full client references.

  2. Accreditations: NSI Gold, SafeContractor, CHAS—certificates supplied with the tender.

  3. Open standards: ONVIF-compliant hardware and OSDP-ready controllers.

  4. Cyber-hardening: HTTPS, VLAN design and quarterly firmware included.

  5. Transparent pricing: fixed-scope quotes; any variation agreed in writing.
