    What is CCTV?

CCTV stands for Closed Circuit Television and now is used to describe a Video Surveillance system.  A CCTV system consists of components including cameras, transmission paths, recorders, control devices and displays.  In its basic form CCTV systems use video cameras to transmit a signal to a previously specified monitor or set of monitors.  It’s most commonly used for real-time surveillance of a building or open area and is an essential tool in protecting people, business property, and assets, with camera systems used to monitor banks, schools, bars, offices, airports, commercial properties, hospitals, shops, and many other locations.

Modern CCTV systems have evolved to provide many smart features that can improve the systems usefulness.  If your office CCTV system has many cameras it might be difficult to track an event you are looking for.  For example, if you arrive in the office on a Monday morning and find that something happened over the weekend when the office is closed.  If you have 10 cameras and potentially more than 380 hours of footage to review (office closes at 6pm on Friday and opens at 8am on Monday).  That is a lot of footage to potentially look at – nearly 48 days if all watched in real time!  Obviously this is not going to happen but our systems can help.  Detecting movement was a good way to find incidents quicker but were not always great – a flapping blind or reflection could easily render this feature useless.  Our systems can instantly detect persons or vehicles in a scene and highlight just these for you to review.  That 380 hours of footage is reduced to just the relevant footage in seconds and your investigation can be complete before your first cup of tea!

    How does CCTV work?

A CCTV system is a collection of cameras that stream live video images back to a recording device.  There are many types of cameras.  These cameras can be fixed to see one area or be able to be moved by the operator.  Cameras that are able to moved are called PTZ cameras.  This stands are Pan, Tilt and Zoom – which means they can move up and down, left and right and zoom into a scene.  A recording device allows the operator to view these live images and play back recorded footage.  A modern system uses a PC and dedicated software to view and control the system.  The cameras can be connected to the system in a variety of ways and these different methods can be used by a single system with no impact on the users.  Wireless can be used if there are issues getting a cable to a camera.  While good quality, reliable wireless links are an additional cost they can enable cameras to be positioned in the best place and reduce costs in running cables and installation time.  Corporate IT networks are also a useful way to deploy CCTV in an office environment.  Existing analogue CCTV cables can also be used to provide HD quality images.  This can be a really effective way to upgrade your current low definition and aging CCTV system.  At ACCL, we will work with you to implement the best, most cost effective solution possible.

Why do you need CCTV installed?

CCTV installations in London and other city centres are becoming increasingly common, as is its use in homes, to increase security and reduce the risk of burglary.

It’s most commonly used for real-time surveillance of a building or open area and is an essential tool in protecting people, business property, and assets, with camera systems used to monitor banks, schools, bars, offices, airports, commercial properties, hospitals, shops, and many other locations.

CCTV can be used to monitor activity within your business.  The possibilities are almost endless for this.  We have clients that use CCTV to ways that you might not even have though of.  For example we have a high end car audio company with a large workshop – they often use the extensive camera system to find lost keys!  An engineer will put them down and then forget where he put them – CCTV can quickly track his movements and work out where the keys ended up!  Our client finds this added benefit priceless – they wanted a system to protect the high value assets but our design and installation has given this added benefit they use daily – saving them time and money.

CCTV can protect your business from breaches of security and help with insurance claims.  Many companies share common areas with other companies – a good system can help you resolve issues that can occur between neighbours.

CCTV Network solutions for business & office environments

CCTV cameras help deter intruders and give employees peace of mind.  Potential unwanted intruders are less likely to attempt to enter a building if they see modern overt CCTV camera capturing them before they enter the site.  CCTV systems now feature full colour, high-resolution rendering, which works well at night.  Installing CCTV offers a wide range of security features – cameras can provide 180 or even 360 degree views of an area giving unprecedented coverage.  Cameras can even strobe a white light if they detect movement – extremely useful in back of house areas where potential intruders might attempt to break in – the flashing light will make them aware that there is an active camera watching them and give extremely good images of the person in any lighting situation.  Our experienced CCTV team can design and install a solution to meet your needs and that can grow to meet future needs.

CCTV Integration security solutions for your business

We can install CCTV system to work as part of your existing security solutions and enhance their effectiveness. Access control of a site can be improved with the addition of video verification – if there is a question of who entered an area, CCTV can be used to verify the access control records.  Cards can be used by anyone – so the card information provided by the access control system might not be accurate if a card has been misused.

    Image quality

CCTV cameras now provide exceptional image quality in many different situation.  Our experts will select the right camera for each location and ensure that each camera is positioned and setup in the most effective way.  Advanced setting within the cameras allows for optimal image quality.  A common issue with entrance cameras is that at certain times of the day the sun can provide a strong backlight effect that can produce a silhouette effect and the features of someone can be obscured.  We will ensure that the camera is able to cope with this scenario and produce identification images at all times of the day.

Extending the life of legacy systems

Active Communication Company Ltd recognizes that it is not always possible to fund an entire replacement of CCTV hardware and infrastructure. We are able to advise on the latest encoding software that will allow the upgrading of analogue camera systems and the migration to Internet transmission. In conjunction with changing recording devices, ACCL can help enhance the quality of your existing CCTV system, allowing it to be overhauled in a controlled timescale.

How to Choose the Ideal CCTV Camera Type

Ready to call a security company to handle your CCTV installation process? While CCTV installation experts can help you with choosing the ideal type of CCTV cameras, it doesn’t hurt to be familiar with some of the basic options before you make the call.

The list below will provide you some insight into the functions CCTV cameras can handle and the options we can use to build your customised system. Depending on your budget and your needs, you can opt for one, two, or more types of security cameras. For instance, you don’t have to pay extra to have HD cameras in areas where you don’t need them.

Let’s take a look at the surveillance cameras and systems that can offer your peace of mind and keep your premises safe from intruders. Take a look at the available CCTV Security systems.

The most popular types of CCTV monitoring cameras are:

    Dome CCTV

They get their name from their dome-shaped casing around the camera. Their unobtrusive design makes them super easy to fit for any outdoor or indoor use. The dome makes it hard for intruders to tamper with the camera, so you’ll enjoy a future-proof security system.

Dome CCTV cameras are ideal for restaurants, hotels, casinos, and others because they have 360-degree angles and can be easily added to any monitoring system.

    Pros Cons Ideal for
    • unobtrusive design
    • Limited range
    • Office
    • easy to fit in or outside
    • Periodic cleaning required
    • Hotels
    • vandal proof

    • Casinos
    • wide angle of coverage

    • Home
    • Difficult to see the direction the camera is viewing

    Turret Cameras

Similar to dome camera but do not have a glass dome covering the lens.

    Pros Ideal for
    • unobtrusive design
    • Office
    • easy to fit in or outside
    • Hotels
    • vandal proof
    • Casinos

    • Home
    • Easy to see the direction the camera is viewing

    • Cons

    • Limited range

    • Periodic cleaning required but less than a dome camera

    Bullet CCTV

Bullet CCTV cameras are perhaps the most widespread option. Their iconic design makes them easy to recognise and act as a deterrent for intruders.

CCTV specialists always recommend bullet cameras where possible because they withstand rain and even extreme weather conditions very well. They may not be suitable for high-definition and high-quality photos, but they are still a great technology for outdoor use.

    Bullet camera

    • flexible design
    • Can be moved out of position

PTZ Pan Tilt & Zoom Cameras

Not only does the optical zoom give you the possibility to focus on certain areas, but the pan/tilt function provides a 360-degree view angle. This way, your security service can always be on top of every situation, even developing ones, as they have

    the opportunity to react quickly.

    PTZ Camera

PTZ means Pan Tilt & Zoom – the camera can be moved to see anywhere around it.

    • Can miss incidents when moved

    • More prone to failure

All camera form factors can have the following:

    Infrared/Night Vision CCTV

Want to install CCTV cameras that are useful 24/7? The night vision cameras are what you need. If you worry about night-time security, these cameras are the ideal solution.

Advanced chipsets now give extremely sharp HD images even in completed darkness.

    Day/Night CCTV

Need a CCTV system that doesn’t compromise quality depending on the time of day? Day/night CCTV cameras are designed to ensure your security 24/7. Typically, they record in both colour and black and white and the quality of the image when the lighting is ideal is very good.

Day/night cameras are typically used when you want to install CCTV in outdoor areas, where the light is variable.

    Network/IP CCTV

Go mobile with your monitoring by using network/IP cameras. Their feed can be accessed online, from anywhere in the world, which makes them ideal for offices where management travels a lot.

The feed is stored on NVR (Network Video Recorders) – not to be confused with DVR(Digital video recorder), which is used for analog cameras for later access. Your archive footage can always be accessed via NVR for later use. Plus, the installation process is very easy, since there are no computer stations or co-axial cables required. Learn more about IP Cameras and IP CCTV systems here.

    Wireless CCTV

Thinking about installing CCTV on your premises, but dread the long process? We get it! Wireless cameras are often the fastest system to install because they need fewer cables. Please bear in mind that, despite their name, wireless cameras aren’t 100% wireless. They still need to be connected to the mains network to draw power. Some newer options work on batteries, but do keep in mind that this means changing the batteries quite frequently.

Still, they are an increasingly popular option, especially in indoor environments like churches, museums, stately homes, art galleries, and others where aesthetics are very important.

Still not sure what type of CCTV system or camera is the ideal fit for your company or your oganisation? No problem!

Our CCTV installation service always starts with an on-premise survey. This will help us identify the most suitable security camera system for your security needs, as well as the best solution budget- and aesthetics-wise.
