A Safe Working Environment: Is Your Office Cabling a Hazard?

Thousands of offices throughout the UK have cabling issues at workstations. Poorly maintained systems look untidy whilst presenting an unsafe working environment. To combat this anomaly, ACCL now provide a bespoke service that will transform your office, whilst reducing risk.

Health and Safety legislation provides clear guidelines:

  • The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 requires employers to provide a safe working environment and suitable equipment for all employees and visitors.

  • The Display Screen Equipment (DSE) Regulations require employers to conduct workstation assessments to identify and mitigate potential health risks.

  • The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations mandate that employers carry out risk assessments for all work activities and processes, increasing awareness of potential hazards among staff and visitors.

  • The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 requires employers to undertake fire risk assessments to identify hazards, implement control measures, and establish procedures for emergencies or drills.

Slow or sluggish response times can often provide a signal that something is amiss; equally a quick glance under a desk will give insight into how a system is being maintained.

Problems caused by cabling are:

Cat6a produces double the capacity (500MHz) and distance (up to 100m), it is, therefore, a perfect solution for bandwidth-hungry enterprises that cover large distances

– Creates trip hazards for users, employees and visitors
– Equipment is more likely to be damaged as a result of a trip
– Reduction in under-desk space for the user
– More difficult to identify equipment and faults
– Increased likelihood of electrocution
– Makes PAT testing a drawn-out out disruptive process
– Increases the risk of fire
