Overview: structured cabling Holborn for Verizon Business

Verizon Business asked ACCL to deliver structured cabling Holborn’s most advanced technology showcase could depend on: the passive network foundation for an enterprise innovation centre at MidCity Place, built to demonstrate Private 5G, AI, edge computing, IoT and immersive collaboration technologies to visiting clients.

Every one of those live demonstrations depends on the cabling and connectivity running underneath it, so the passive infrastructure had to be treated as a critical part of the fit-out rather than a secondary building service.

ACCL’s role was to build that foundation as a single coordinated programme: a 358-outlet Category 6A structured cabling estate, an 8-core single-mode and multimode fibre backbone, and rooftop Private 5G infrastructure, all delivered, tested and certified within a fixed eight-week schedule.

Rather than splitting the cabling and the connectivity layer between separate specialists, ACCL held single-contractor accountability across the whole passive network, from the outlets on each floor to the antennas on the roof.

The challenge

MidCity Place needed to support multiple live technology demonstrations running at the same time, each dependent on the passive network beneath it, so the challenge was not simply the volume of cabling, 358 outlets across the building, but coordinating that install alongside a resilient fibre backbone and a rooftop wireless installation without any of the three becoming a separate, disconnected project.

The rooftop element added its own constraint: the two Private 5G antennas needed a clear, unobstructed line of sight, but access to the roof itself was restricted, which ruled out a conventional installation method.

All of this had to be delivered inside a fixed eight-week programme, leaving no room for a fault or a missed handover between contractors to cost time that the schedule did not have.

One contractor, one coordinated programme

A showcase built around several simultaneous live technology demonstrations cannot afford an infrastructure fault during a client visit. ACCL provided Verizon with single-contractor accountability across both the structured cabling and the connectivity layer, rather than splitting the passive network between separate specialists for the floors and the roof.

That single point of accountability mattered most on the roof, where two Private 5G antennas had to be installed with an unobstructed line of sight, through a building with restricted roof access. ACCL managed the cabling, the fibre backbone and the rooftop installation as one coordinated programme rather than three separate handoffs, which removed the coordination risk that comes from splitting a passive network across multiple specialists.

358 Cat6A outlets and an 8-core fibre backbone

ACCL installed 358 Leviton Category 6A outlets throughout the building, ready for Multi-Gigabit Ethernet and PoE++ powered devices, giving Verizon headroom for the higher-bandwidth, higher-power equipment that live technology demonstrations typically need. Supporting that horizontal cabling was an 8-core single-mode and multimode fibre backbone, installed and fusion spliced to link the building’s network infrastructure.

Every element of the installation was tested and certified: copper cabling was Fluke certified to BS EN 50173-1:2018, the installation itself certified to BS EN 50174-2:2018, and the fibre backbone certified to ISO/IEC 14763-3:2024. ACCL registered a 25-year Leviton system warranty on completion, with full results recorded in the operations and maintenance manuals handed over to Verizon.

Rooftop Private 5G via rope access

For the rooftop Private 5G installation, ACCL used specialist rope-access engineers to route fibre and coaxial feeder cables to two rooftop antennas, avoiding the need for scaffolding or conventional access equipment on a roof with restricted access.

The two antennas needed a clear, unobstructed line of sight to function, so the routing had to be planned around the roof’s physical constraints as carefully as the fibre and copper cabling below it.

Because the same team was accountable for the fibre and structured cabling as well as the rooftop work, the antenna feeder cables could be planned as a continuation of the building’s wider connectivity design rather than commissioned separately once the floors below were already finished.

ACCL’s role

This project required considerably more than fitting outlets and access points. ACCL provided Verizon with a complete passive infrastructure build, including:

  • Structured cabling design and installation of 358 Leviton Cat6A outlets
  • 8-core single-mode and multimode fibre backbone with fusion splicing
  • Rooftop Private 5G cabling via specialist rope access
  • Fluke certification of copper cabling and ISO/IEC 14763-3:2024 fibre certification
  • Leviton 25-year warranty registration
  • Operations and maintenance manual handover, delivered in a fixed eight-week programme

Foreword by Wayne

Wayne Connors, Managing Director, ACCL
“Two rooftop 5G antennas need a clear line of sight, and MidCity Place’s roof access does not make that easy. We used rope-access engineers rather than force a conventional installation onto a roof that was not built for it, and it worked because the same team was accountable for the fibre and the cabling underneath as well as the roof. Verizon’s showcase depends on several demonstrations running at once, in front of clients, so there was no room for a fault to trace back to a handoff between contractors. Three hundred and fifty eight outlets and an eight week programme later, everything is Fluke certified and carries a 25 year warranty. It is a good example of what a single-contractor build can do that a split installation usually cannot: no gaps, no handover risk, and a schedule that held.”

Frequently asked questions

What did ACCL install at Verizon Business’s Holborn site?

ACCL designed, installed and certified the structured cabling, fibre backbone and rooftop Private 5G infrastructure for Verizon Business’s enterprise innovation centre at MidCity Place, including 358 Category 6A outlets and an 8-core single-mode and multimode fibre backbone.

How were the rooftop Private 5G antennas installed?

Two rooftop Private 5G antennas were installed using specialist rope-access engineers, who routed fibre and coaxial feeder cables to the antennas without needing scaffolding or conventional access equipment on a roof with restricted access.

How long did the Verizon Business project take?

The complete structured cabling, fibre backbone and rooftop Private 5G installation was delivered inside a fixed eight-week programme.

What certification was carried out on the cabling and fibre?

Copper cabling was Fluke certified to BS EN 50173-1:2018, the installation certified to BS EN 50174-2:2018, and the fibre backbone certified to ISO/IEC 14763-3:2024. A 25-year Leviton system warranty was registered on completion.

Why did Verizon use a single contractor for cabling and connectivity?

An enterprise innovation centre running multiple live technology demonstrations cannot afford a fault during a client visit. A single contractor accountable for the cabling, fibre backbone and rooftop Private 5G removed the coordination risk of splitting the passive network across separate specialists.

What warranty applies to the installation?

ACCL registered a 25-year Leviton system warranty on the completed cabling installation, with full results recorded in the operations and maintenance manuals handed over to Verizon.

How many outlets were installed at MidCity Place?

358 Leviton Category 6A outlets were installed throughout the building, ready for Multi-Gigabit Ethernet and PoE++ powered devices.

What challenges did the rooftop access present?

The rooftop Private 5G antennas needed a clear, unobstructed line of sight, but roof access at MidCity Place was restricted, which ruled out a conventional installation method. ACCL used specialist rope-access engineers to install the cabling instead.
