Practical answers based on recognised cabling, network and security standards. The appropriate specification depends on the building, its systems and the operational requirement.

Can CCTV, access control and office data really share one network?
Yes, where the security, resilience and client requirements allow it. A certified application-independent plant under EN 50173 can support data, CCTV, access control and Wi-Fi, with appropriate VLANs, QoS and documentation.
Separate physical cabling is not automatically required for every system. The design should determine where shared infrastructure, logical separation or dedicated routes are appropriate.
Do I need Cat8 to the desk for AI?
No. Cat6A carries 10GbE over the full 100 m channel and has a typical 15 to 20-year service life. Cat8 is limited to approximately 30 m and is intended for data-centre applications rather than standard office horizontal cabling.
Cat8 is not the default choice for standard office runs. “Cat7” and “Cat6e” also require care because neither is a TIA-recognised cabling category.
What drives an office cabling upgrade in 2026?
The ceiling, not the desk: Wi-Fi 7 plus high-power PoE. Plan 2–4 Cat6A drops per access point, ≥2.5G backhaul (10G in dense zones), and up to 71.3 W delivered per device under IEEE 802.3bt Type 4.
Copilot alone does not normally require re-cabling. Microsoft Teams HD video uses approximately 1.5 to 4 Mb/s per stream; concurrency, Wi-Fi capacity and uplink design are usually more significant than individual desk bandwidth.
Will high-power PoE cook my cables?
Heat becomes a material design consideration in dense 60 to 90 W bundles. TIA TSB-184-A limits bundle temperature rise to 15 °C, so cable construction, bundle size and installation conditions must be reviewed during design.
Not every PoE installation presents the same thermal risk. Low-power 15 to 30 W devices and small bundles have different requirements from dense high-power installations. Copper-clad aluminium cable should not be used.
How long can we legally keep CCTV footage?
Typical UK commercial retention is around 30 days. Keeping footage longer must be justified and documented under UK GDPR; clear signage is required, and subject access requests must be answered within one calendar month.
CCTV retention must be based on a documented operational need. Lower storage cost does not remove the UK GDPR data-minimisation requirement.
Does office AI need a data centre in the basement?
No. Edge AI inference runs in standard air-cooled racks. The average enterprise rack draws ~12 kW, and over 80% of operators run nothing above 30 kW. Sensible power headroom and tidy fibre beat exotic cooling.
Liquid cooling is generally associated with high-density GPU training environments and is not normally required in a commercial office.
